10 Single Mother Truths

1. You hear the words ‘insufficient funds’ on a daily basis and it doesn’t freak you out; and the words ‘transaction approved’ make you jump for joy

2. The word you use most when talking to your girlfriends is ‘overwhelmed’

3. Parenting is all about selling options to your child. Single parenting is begging for the sale for your sanity

4. After wondering why your shopping seems a bit cheaper than usual, your day is made when you get home and discover the checkout person hasn’t swiped five of your most expensive grocery items

5. You lie awake at 3am wondering if you should go back to the shop so you don’t get charged with shoplifting. The thought that your children only have one parent weighs heavily on your mind

6. If your children go to their father’s every second weekend, your house is clean 26 times per year

7. Your children develop a sudden fondness for whichever fruit costs $28 per kilo (because it has to be airlifted from Belize) and be invited to four different children’s dress up parties around the time that your hours at work get cut back

8. Disneyland Dad suddenly has money for fancy restaurants with his new girlfriend while you struggle to find ‘imaginative’ recipes in the ‘700 Ways With Baked Beans cook book for dinner every night

9. The words tax refund cause you the same excitement as the words ‘Saturday night and it’s time to partay, get your disco boots on’ did a few short years ago

10. You have to be physically restrained from strangling your 20 something male stoner neighbour when he tells you he’s exhausted because he woke up early to get a surf in before he took his girlfriend out for a late brunch

Sweet 16

Happy birthday amazing, beautiful prototype child. You changed my life, waking me up to the beauty of the world and I love you for it.

Don’t Give Up

I am blessed to have many beautiful friends in this life. Today two brave friends went through a terrible ordeal and will need to find the strength to overcome vast pain. I am thankful for my beautiful friends and all they have endured. I will be there when you need me

Everything is disposable except people

A beautiful soul just left the earth too soon. I see too many sweet young souls die in my work life. I hope she is in the arms of the angels. One day cancer will be a bad memory.

That Old Black Magic

My Dad used to take his teeth out and scare my sister and I by singing this song in the dark when we were growing up. I loved it and my sister hated it. Today would have been my Dad’s 86th birthday. Love you Dad.

Nothing good gets away

When I was 11 my Dad told me I had to read the classic authors, these included Ernest Hemingway and John Steinbeck. My Dad, Jack Pollard, was a writer and journalist and his favourite Steinbeck book was the Grapes of Wrath. I preferred Of Mice and Men, warming to Lenny and George at a young age. As my Dad died 10 years ago today I’m posting this beautiful letter written to Steinbeck’s son as a tribute to my Dad. Love you Papa Jack. I miss you every day.

Dear Thom:

We had your letter this morning. I will answer it from my point of view and of course Elaine will from hers.

First — if you are in love — that’s a good thing — that’s about the best thing that can happen to anyone. Don’t let anyone make it small or light to you.

Second — There are several kinds of love. One is a selfish, mean, grasping, egotistical thing which uses love for self-importance. This is the ugly and crippling kind. The other is an outpouring of everything good in you — of kindness and consideration and respect — not only the social respect of manners but the greater respect which is recognition of another person as unique and valuable. The first kind can make you sick and small and weak but the second can release in you strength, and courage and goodness and even wisdom you didn’t know you had.

You say this is not puppy love. If you feel so deeply — of course it isn’t puppy love.

But I don’t think you were asking me what you feel. You know better than anyone. What you wanted me to help you with is what to do about it — and that I can tell you.

Glory in it for one thing and be very glad and grateful for it.

The object of love is the best and most beautiful. Try to live up to it.

If you love someone — there is no possible harm in saying so — only you must remember that some people are very shy and sometimes the saying must take that shyness into consideration.

Girls have a way of knowing or feeling what you feel, but they usually like to hear it also.

It sometimes happens that what you feel is not returned for one reason or another — but that does not make your feeling less valuable and good.

Lastly, I know your feeling because I have it and I’m glad you have it.

We will be glad to meet Susan. She will be very welcome. But Elaine will make all such arrangements because that is her province and she will be very glad to. She knows about love too and maybe she can give you more help than I can.

And don’t worry about losing. If it is right, it happens — The main thing is not to hurry. Nothing good gets away.

Love,

Fa

Single Mother’s Day

Just when I think single motherhood is too crazy and I want to take them back to the pet shop to get a refund, I get this card from my 7 year old:

My mummy is so nice unique and pretty

Mummy I love you

Mummy I never want you to go away

You are the best mummy in the world

Love S

I did not pay her to do this. In the stressed out, overworked world of single motherhood we sometimes forget about the joy of mothering and that all the little tedious tasks of being a mother on your own add up to a lifetime of love and care for your children. So I’d like to pay tribute to all the solo mothers I’ve met, you inspire me with your hard work, dedication and devoted love. You are all yummy mummies.

Bang Bang

Happy Valentine’s Day

Love or lust?

My current single mother desperado ‘he will sweep me away and pay for my children to have a good life’ crush is the French newsreader Laurent Delahousse. Laurent has a Harry Handsome tan and the same hair my big brother had in 1977, the flicky, fluffy male equivalent of Farrah Fawcett’s big do in the original Charlie’s Angels. I watch him on SBS in the mornings. My schoolgirl French is way too slow to understand every word he is saying but he is so good looking (in a Zoolander way) that I can’t help it. I love him and I want him bad. Who said French men were well dressed but not so hot? Laurent’s hair is magnificent, it looks like a wig. J’aime Laurent, vous êtes très joli.

Je T'aime Laurent
